Summer Fun at Sefton Hall

It’s been a busy few weeks for residents and staff at Sefton Hall as they made the most of the sunshine by taking part in events centred around the famous Dawlish Carnival.

Dating back over 70 years, this week-long extravaganza typically held in mid-August, is a time-honoured tradition beloved by locals and visitors alike.

What started as a modest gathering to mark the end of the summer season has blossomed into a full-scale carnival that attracts thousands of people from across the country. It is a true community effort, with local organisations, businesses, and volunteers coming together to create a memorable experience.

At the heart of the Dawlish Carnival is the grand parade—a lively walking procession that winds its way through the town’s streets, displaying dazzling   costumes, and energetic performances.

This year, the team and residents from Sefton Hall joined in the fun by dressing up as characters from The Wizard of Oz.

Marching bands, dance troupes, and performers added to the festive atmosphere, while spectators lined the streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the colourful spectacle. The parade ended at Brunswick Place, where many other carnival activities took place.

Sefton Hall was the proud sponsor of the BMX Ramp Bike Show, where demonstrations by the experts at Extreme Fusion delighted the crowds. For many years, the home has also sponsored the Sefton Cup at the annual competition held at Dawlish Bowling Club, with residents and staff attending the finals.

Established in 1907, the club is justifiably proud if its bowling green, one of the best in the Teignbridge area. It takes a lot of work and money to keep it in good condition, but it makes a lovely space in the centre of the to sit and watch an afternoon’s play.

Sefton’s residents also enjoyed their very own carnival in the grounds of the home. Events included an It’s A Knockout-style competition with opposing staff teams dressed in a variety of colourful costumes, including hulas, French Maids, circus ring masters, cowboys and girls and chickens.

There were also cake decorating and ice-cream eating competitions to enjoy – truly something for everyone.

The Dawlish Carnival is a celebration of all things community, creativity, and fun. It is a chance to experience the best of Devon’s hospitality and enjoy a week filled with laughter, entertainment, and shared experiences – and Sefton Hall has once again played a central role in the festivities.
